In 1876, when the film first takes place, Leopold Alexis Elijah Walker Gareth Thomas Mountbatten is thirty years old, and according to his Uncle Millard, "a blemish to the family name." It is his obligation to marry a wealthy American, because the Mountbatten's financial assets have become depleted. Leopold, a dreamer who is restless in his situation, seems to have no other choice.

Leopold is sophisticated and gentlemanly, with a quick wit. As a scientist, he finds solutions to the flaws of modern appliances, such as Kate's toaster. His eloquence in conversation matches his intelligence, and Charlie, Kate's brother, believes that Leopold is a brilliant actor who never drops the 'act.'

When Leopold first meets Kate, he is intrigued by her sarcasm and ambition, and defines her as a "career woman," like a librarian from Sussex that he once courted. He even tells her that he feels he has met her before.
